Agenda 21

Agenda 21 is a comprehensive plan of action that was produced at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, commonly known as the Earth Summit or Rio Summit. The plan is to be taken globally, nationally and locally by organizations of the United Nations, system, national governments and major groups in every area in which human impacts on the environment. Progress on implementation of Agenda 21 is monitored by the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD).

Review of the Earth Summit was made after five years in 1997, Rio+5. Another review took place in 2002 in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The plan has now become a working document of many countries.

World Summit on Sustainable Development

Botswana established a National Agenda 21 Coordinating Committee chaired by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Environment, Ms Botshelo Mathuba to prepare a report on Botswana’s National Report on the Implementation of Agenda 21 and other Earth Summit decisions. This report presents progress made, implementation issues, challenges, gaps, emerging issues and the way forward in the four main sectors namely Social and Economic Dimensions, Conservation and Management of Resources for Development, Strengthening the Role of Major Groups and Means of Implementation.
